Open Letter to Joe Biden, President of the United States of America

Your Excellency Mr Joe Biden,

A continuous flow of public revelations verify that, the NATO’s military presence at Afghanistan served, mostly, purposes which they hadn’t ex ante been designated towards all the involved, to this mission, Nations.

The presence, at Afghanistan, of fine German soldiers, was mandatory due to existing international treaties (May 21th, 1949) of which, your country is a cosignatory.

From the NATO’s perspective, the German soldiers, they should remain ineligible for comprehending what was obvious to anyone sober person who might was present at the theatre of military operations, in order for them to needlessly, fearlessly, and inprudently sacrifice their sacred and invaluable lives; the international treaties gives them no other, civilized, option.

59 fine German soldiers were needlessly sacrificed and many others they were injured.

Now, all the German soldiers have returned home.

However, I wonder, while, the German soldiers, they were doing their “duty” (?) at Afghanistan, had, their human-rights, been respected?

If, their human-rights, they hadn’t been respected, then, this crime against them, it cannot remain hidden as, quite easily identified side-effects, they shall manifest upon them.

And even worst, in case that, for any reason, some of the German troops they travel abroad Germany, then, it is almost certain that, misdiagnoses and other criminal methods, of the contemporary settler-colonialism, they shall degrade these soldiers, more or less, to mere human-meat for the medical and the pharmaceutical, criminal domains, in these foreign countries, to monetarily capitalize their lives and criminally earn more billions dollars from selling, needless and catastrophic, medicines and services.

I know very well that, your honourable Nation includes, also, few bright and in many positive ways, exceptional citizens. And I have no doubt that, these fine Americans, they, not only, realize how vital, for your Nation’s creative evolution, its self-knowledge, it is; but, it can’t be otherwise, they have already mobilized every possible resource they could honorably influence in order for this self-knowledge to become maximized, before it is too late.

In case that, I might find out that, even one German soldier’s human-rights had been violated while s/he was at Afghanistan, then, I fear that, it shall become almost impossible for me, despite my positive intentions, to envision your Nation to collect positive consequences, due to significant progress in its self-knowledge, in the forceable future.

Concluding, I take for granted that, great Americans, in the past, heroically, they “opened windows of creative opportunities” in order for the United States of America to, in many ways, upgrade the quality of theirs bilateral and multilateral relationships with the rest of the international community; but now, it seems that, your Nation is being threatened to suffer the consequences of having, willingly, waisted an irreplaceable opportunity.

Bild blasts Germany for 'evacuating beer' from Afghanistan

The German government came under fire Tuesday for failing to evacuate Afghan support staff before the Taliban took control of Afghanistan and a transitional government was formed.

Germany's bestselling daily, Bild, sharply criticized the government with a story titled "Germany's withdrawal from Afghanistan: Beer and wine were shipped – local staff are still staying," which blamed it for abandoning local Afghan staff who risked their lives for the Germany.

The German army shipped nearly 65,000 cans of beer and 340 bottles of wine to Germany while completing its troop pullout from Afghanistan at the end of June, the daily reported.

But hundreds of Afghan staff and family members were not granted a visa and were not evacuated promptly, although the Taliban made advances across the country.

"Those who worked for many years for Germany and risked their lives are apparently worth less than cans of beer for the federal government," the daily said in a news analysis piece.

Christoph Hoffmann, a lawmaker from the opposition Free Democratic Party, slammed Foreign Minister Heiko Maas for grave mistakes and failing to prioritize the evacuation of Afghans who worked for German ministries and agencies for many years.

"It's a shame," he told Bild, adding that the federal government "has failed to accurately assess the situation" in Afghanistan in the last couple of months.

At a parliamentary meeting in June, Hoffmann asked Maas about the government's plans to bring Afghan staff who had worked for Germany.

Maas said peace negotiations between the Afghan government and Taliban were likely to continue for some time and he rejected calls by opposition lawmakers to bring more Afghan personnel to Germany, including those who did not have a work contract with the German armed forces but worked for development agencies or other institutions.

During the televised debate, Maas said granting visas to those people and their families would have been a wrong message.

"Then we would be talking about not 2,000 people, but 20,000 people," Maas said and insisted that his government does not want to provoke new refugee flows.

Germany sent three military planes to evacuate remaining diplomatic personnel and Afghan staff Monday, but only one could land because of the chaos at Kabul Hamid Karzai International Airport. The other planes were diverted to neighboring countries.

In the past couple of weeks, Berlin has evacuated nearly 2,000 local staff from Afghanistan, according to the government. But more than 10,000 were still trying to flee, including Afghans who worked for German development agencies, nongovernmental organizations (NGOs) and media outlets, as well as human rights activists and lawyers.

I served with the Nato mission in Afghanistan – it was a bloated mess

In what we call the combat estimate, we ask ourselves a number of questions. One of them is, “What resources do I need to accomplish each effect?” Essentially, troops to task. Nato got this one wrong. It did not need 30,000 self-interested mercenaries who cared more about their bank accounts than the future of Afghanistan. It needed a small and dedicated grouping of experts supported by an appropriately small and well-equipped protection force. This, coupled with virtual engagement (if Covid-19 has taught us something it’s that we can work at distance), would have had the same impact as the bloated mess that Resolute Support eventually became. Importantly, maintaining boots on the ground, albeit in a limited capacity, would have sent a clear message to the Taliban: these new Afghan institutions do not stand alone.

PERVITIN: HOW DRUGS TRANSFORMED WARFARE IN 1939-45

PHYSIOLOGICAL AND STRATEGIC ADVERSE EFFECTS

From 1941, the Reich knew that Pervitin brought side effects and risks of addiction. However, even when soldiers were dying because of heart failures or committing suicide due to the psychotic phases, the methamphetamine continued to fuel the country until the end of war.

The primary concern was related to dependence. Indeed, providing soldiers with daily doses inevitably made them, and their performance, dependent on Pervitin. Heinrich Böll’s written testimonies, for instance, reflect this concern for supply. He was enrolled in the Wehrmacht and during his time on the battlefield, he sent letters to his family back in Germany. In one of them, sent in May 1940, he asked "Perhaps you could obtain some more Pervitin for my supplies? [...] It makes miracles”. He needed it to ensure his physical performance, and benefit from its psychological effects, importantly, maintaining a state of euphoria despite the atrocities of war

And if having a whole population addicted to a drug is, for obvious reasons, not optimal, a major issue appeared with shortage and withdrawal. Indeed, the German population and army experienced the symptoms we know today such as nausea, hallucinations, and diminution of cognitive capacities, anxiety and depression.

And despite Conti’s attempt to limit the use of Pervitin, he could do nothing to prevent abuses. The situation escalated over the years and soldiers died increasingly from cardiac failure, suicide, or military miscalculations. The control had just slipped out of their hands. Comparably, Morell’s interrogations reveal how Hitler’s own drug addiction led to poor strategic choices, allowing enemy victories such as the Normandy landings.

Hence, Germany’s secret weapon, that had allowed the Wehrmacht to shine in the first years of war, backfired and became a reason for the decline and the fall of the Third Reich.
