History of The Study Society and Colet House

A brief history of the Study Society

The Study Society* was registered in 1951 by the late Dr. F.C. Roles and his friends who had been associates of the Russian philosopher and author P.D. Ouspensky (1878-1947). Ouspensky was particularly interested in the inner life of civilisations and in the convergence of science, philosophy, art and religion in the service of truth. He was also very much concerned with the inner transformation of humanity as a matter of practical experience.

The Study Society was founded to carry on his aims and researches. He had also asked Dr Roles to look for a simple method of finding inner stillness that was suitable for people living ordinary active lives. Dr Roles fulfilled this aim in the early 1960s when he discovered a method of meditation and the knowledge associated with it, which is part of the Advaita or non-dualist school of philosophy, as taught by His Holiness, the late Shantanand Saraswati, Shankaracharya of Northern India.

The meditation and the knowledge associated with it are intended for people from all backgrounds religions and races. Membership of the Society, and of societies related to it abroad, ranges over all kinds of professions and ages, from those of student years upwards.

* The original name of the Study Society was The Society for the Study of Normal Psychology. It was then registered as a Friendly Society (No. 60SA). In 2014 the Society became a charity registered as 'The Study Society', a company limited by guarantee, with the Charity Commission, Registered Charity Number 1155498.

The story of Colet House

Colet House, home to the Study Society since 1957, has had a colourful history since it was first built in 1885. It was built on what was previously market gardens in what was then a leafy back water called Red Cow Lane, later to be named Colet Gardens. Its address changed to Talgarth Road in the 1960s when that road was extended to form a route to Heathrow. Colet Gardens got its name from the Renaissance scholar and Dean of St Paul's, John Colet who founded St Paul's school in 1509. In the 1880s, when Colet was built, St Paul's occupied local land and buildings in the immediate area, including land directly opposite now occupied by a further education college.

Colet House has the largest single studio in London, long enough to hold a cricket pitch, and two other substantial studios. It has been a workplace of many artists, notably Sir Frank Brangwyn RA (1867-1956) who described it as "a wonderful place... fit for Michelangelo himself..." and Sir Edward Burne-Jones RA (1833-1898) who was painting there to within hours of his death.

In the 1930s Colet attracted emigrés from post-revolution Russia and the ballet teacher Nicolai Legat from St Petersburg established his renowned school here, attracting dancers from all over the world. P.D. Ouspensky, philosopher, author and teacher of the Fourth Way stayed and lived here before and after World War II. During the war, the house was occupied by Naval Intelligence in support of General Montgomery's D-Day Planning HQ - which was across the road at St Paul's school. Later it became home to the Royal Ballet School, guided by Ninette de Valois and with Margot Fonteyn. The Study Society, dedicated to continuing Ouspensky's work, acquired the freehold in 1957.

The Study Society

Why it exists

Purpose and objectives of the charity

Purpose

The charity is a limited company (number 07034627) registered with the Charity Commission (number 1155498) and embodies a tradition of education of the public through teaching and practice that is designed to bring an inner unity to individuals and to society at large.

To fulfil its charitable purposes, the Society works to preserve, understand and develop the philosophy it inherits from Mr P.D. Ouspensky, Dr F.C. Roles and His Holiness Shantanand Saraswati. These ideas present a unified view of the universe and stress the non-duality between the inner self and the outer world. The Study Society seeks to benefit from the study of other paths which may expand our understanding.

The Society promotes moral and spiritual welfare by encouraging individuals to pursue a journey towards Self-realisation — realisation of their full potential — through experience of the true nature of Consciousness and its deep level of stillness, truth and love.

Objectives

The charity’s objectives are to help:

  • Advance the education of the general public in religion, science, philosophy and the arts.

  • The promotion of moral and spiritual welfare.

The Study Society seeks to fulfil these through:

  • Teachings on the philosophy of Advaita (‘not two’) which promotes unity as opposed to separation.

  • Teaching and practice of sacred dances known as ‘The Movements’

  • Teaching and practice of the whirling dervish tradition of Mevlevi turning which originated over 700 years ago in Konya, Turkey

  • Teaching and practice of Vedic Chanting

  • Teachings and gatherings to celebrate the poetry of Rumi

  • Hosting multidisciplinary events and workshops that integrate Advaita philosophy, science, dance, somatic practise and the arts.

  • Publishing books and magazines

  • Sharing knowledge through the internet.

Our activities take place through regular meetings, most of which are open to the public.

We love to offer space to other teachers who wish to share other practices that support our educational objectives.

Main Subject

Since my childhood, I like to learn.

During the early ‘90s, I had already devoloped an intense interest for the Eastern philosophy. Therefore, when I was informed that, in Athens, there was the Greek department (Omilos Meleton) of a prominent, British education institution (The Study Society) within which I could be educated on the Eastern philosophy, without hesitation, I became a student of the Athens’ department for, approximately, nine years.

During my studies there, I attended to the Summer camping of the institue which was located at the area of Verda (pls see photo).

The knowledge that I tried to become acquainted with at that school, I imagine, that has, literary, widened the way by which I am investigating the things that matter to me.

For example, with a certain degree of exaggeration, before I gain this kind of knowledge I, most probably, would had never investigated the possibility of any existing, though seeming awkward, relationships, hypothetically, between:

- the structure of each one’s mentality with their corresponding envirnment’s elementary forms

- an, exactly, two years lasting headace with any specific National economy

- the Middle East with the German Police

- the multi-national supermarket chains with the political situation at the European Union

- a Police Station’s laser printer with a State’s political elections

- the internal, silent dialog that any of us, from time to time, may initiate with his self, with the rigidity of the political systems, worlwide.

The British Nation, by offering to the Greek society such educational opportunities, actually, allowed the Greek citizens to become acquainted, not only with the primary subject of the related studies but, also, with the British Nation’s, various kinds of values (scientific, moral, cultural, political, etc.) and spirituality.

Concluding, I believe that, such, actually impressive, British educational gestures worth having the undisturbed attention of all those citizens which, actually, value the humanitarian Civilization and which appreciate, Peace, Freedom, Cooperation and frugal Prosperity.
