Ballistic missile interception's angle

 

As it seems, it has been accustomed that, the ballistic missiles are pursuing their targets through a trajectory which forms an angle approximately of 90 degrees with the trajectory of the incoming missile.

I think that this trajectory strategy is unproductive because it results a relatively higher speed of collision of the two missiles.

The rate of change of the distance between the two missiles, meaning, the linear speed of decrease of the linear distance between the two missiles is given by the mathematical formula:

 

SQRT(POWER(m1;2)+POWER(m2;2)-2*m1*m2*COS(RADIANS(f)))

where, m1 is first missile's linear speed, m2 is second missile's speed and f is the angle between their corresponding trajectories, in degrees.

 

For example, if the incoming missile's linear speed is Mach 8 and the defender missile's linear speed is Mach 8,2 then, for the following angles, in degrees, see which is going to be the linear speed of their collision:

 

90 degrees, Mach 11.46

135 degrees, Mach 14.97

-15 degrees, Mach 2.12

-5 degrees, Mach 0.73

 

By guiding the defender missile's so that he approaches the incoming missile from “behind”, namely, the corresponding two vectors of their linear speeds to become as parallel and as near to a common axon as possible, and the two missiles cruising towards the same direction of this near common axon, the linear speed of the collision between them decreases radically.

By minimizing the linear speed of the collision between them, the aiming of the incoming missile is far more accurate and the possibility of collision failure is minimized.

 

2nd method
The objectives of this method are:
1. To excaust prematurely the incoming missile's fuel for not being able to reach its destination.
2. To slow down its speed.
3. To make a close approach.
4. To neutralize it.
This method intends to exploit the fact that, missiles loose, large amounts of kinetic energy and speed, each time they have to make a turn.
The algorithm is this:
1. The defending missile goes straight to a point, upon the incoming missile's dynamicaly calculated tragectory, which, at the time of arrival, shall be in the front of the incoming missile, at adequate distance from him and while crouising towards the same direction though with a little slower speed.
2. The defending missile approaches the incoming missile from its front.
3. If, the incoming missile doesn't turn away then, it becomes neutralized; otherwise, a missiles' dog-fight follows which, unavoidably, ends with the incoming missile becoming neutralized due to disadvantages related, to relative weight, to relative autonomy and to relative manuverability.
